Its the end of August, and that means only one thing - the latest edition of The Hornsounder is to be published! August has been a quiet month, as a lot of Band Members have been away, but we are very grateful to those members who have taken the time and effert to write an article.

So, sit back with a Brew, and read the latest installment of The Hornsounder.

Our Editor, Canis, will be back next month making sure The Hornsounder is running smoothly!

A Sad Goodbye
By Corki, The Marshal-General

Some sad news came at the end of August. The Band learnt that one of its first Members, and a person who was key in getting the Band into an ORG, is leaving due to personnel reasons.

Farewell Mushuganna, and the best of luck in whatever you do! You will always have a place here in the Band, if you want to return! Mushuganna was the first Band member to reach the rank of Captain-General, and was always posting and replying to music and holiday reviews. He also stood as Captain-General of the infantry for a time, and led the division forward, lying down strong foundations for the division now.

So we all know a little about Mushu, I am posting a questionnaire that Mushu answered a while back! Please enjoy reading!

Dragonmount & The Band of the Red Hand

1. How did you find DM?
I was looking at the official site at Tor, and they mentioned Dragonmount, so I decided to check it out.

2. Why did you join DM and the Band Org? (other than you love WoT)
I joined DM because I didn't really have anything better to do. When I first signed up, the Band was my first Org choice, but then it turned out there WAS no Band, but I left it for a few months, before I changed it. Right afterwards, the Band showed up, and I was like "Great timing".

3. Why are you still in DM?
Because it's fun, you meet lots of people, and it's addicting...slightly.

4. Who is your best friend at DM?
I can't narrow it down. There's Cam, Neira, Khaira, Lara Luvitt, oh man, I'd name all of you, but not enough room.

5. What organisations are you in other than the WT? (My fault! It should say Band! Corki)
Other than the WT?? I'm not in the WT anymore...I'm in the Kin, the Wolfkin, the BT, and the Band.

6. What is your rank?
I'm a colour sergeant, captain-general. (This questionnaire was created when we were using the old rank system! Corki)

7. Do you have any special titles that you carry, for example, from other Orgs?
Wolf Pup, that's about it.

8. After you joined the Band org, which division did you join?
INFANTRY ALL THE WAY!!!

9. Why did you choose to join your chosen division?
Because it's the best.

10. What are your goals at DM? Would you like to become the Captain-General/Banner-Captain/Org Leader?
Well, I'm already Captain-General, and Corki's doing a fine job of Org Leader, so my goal right now is to rise in ranks in the BT, and make the Band the best Org around.

Personal

11. How old are you?
16

12. Where do you live?
California

13. What do you do for a living?
Student

Wheel of Time

14. How far are you in the Wheel of Time series?
Still need to read New Spring

15. Who helped you or how did you come to find the Wheel of Time series?
Everyone I know kept asking me "Have you read Wheel of Time??!" and so I read it.

16. What do you think of Robert Jordan’s writing throughout the books?
I think he changes as he goes. He becomes a lot more subtle in the later books, but it's just as good.

17. What is your favourite Wheel of Time book that you have read so far?
Hard choice. Probably Crossroads of Twilight.

18. What is your favourite scene in WoT so far?
When Mat takes over in the battle against the Shaido.

19. Is there any series/books you prefer more than WoT?
Orson Scott Card's Ender series, but it's more of a tie.

Well, I hope you enjoyed finding out a little about Mushu! I, and the Band, hope everything goes fine for you in the future! And please visit us when you can! You will always be welcome!!!!

All Herald the Coming of the Game!
By Canis Rufus, Lieutenant-Captain of the Cavalry

After much work and many grueling hours spent by numerous Band members, the Band's Game is up and running. Based on a four prong system of strength, accuracy, speed and Weapon, the Game brings to the Band what it had long been looking for, the ability to go to battle. The system got its roots from many different on line role playing systems and formated its likeness based on Robert Jordan's own inventions. Through carefully planing, there is even the introduction of Darkfriend battles, where Band Members can battle Trollocs, Fades, Darkfriends and even the outside chance of running into a Hellhound. The biggest advancement has been by the Band's very own Idennis, also known as Mallet, who not only programmed the dice system to get the game moving, but created a website that will collect all the info on character advancement and the bad guys that are out there. There are also plans for the creation of a Hall of Records. This hall will be used to track great wins and losses as well as who the current "Lord of the Zero" is. The title currently is being held by Lazy. All in all, the Game has shaped up to be working well despite some bumpy starts. So if you have not had a chance to get involved please do as every one would love to see you there.

To Live the 13th Warrior
by Mallett (idennis), Corporal of the Infantry

Have you ever read a book and wished you were the hero? Have you ever watched a film and thought it would be great to be the centre of the story? Have you ever wished to walk the lands of Middle Earth, have you ever wished to be Beowulf?

I have.

Then it is time for you to experience the ultimate in holidays, one where you take a holiday from yourself, where you can be someone else, the hero or the villain, the choice is yours. Your holiday is just like a book but it’s a book that is written as the events occur and no one knows its end, victory or death await.

Welcome to Live Role Playing.

I have been Live Role Playing for near on twenty years and in my time I have played more than a few characters but most recently I am a Dwarven noble, a leader for a band of nobles that sacrificed land and title to follow a King, to become his most elite and vicious hounds, his Kriegshund.

In this roll I have faced demons, and slew a Balrog, but of all the epic tales I have encountered the most memorable was a remake of the film The 13th Warrior.

Within my circle of friends 13th Warrior has become a cult film, an adaptation of the Beowulf saga. One of my good friends, Terry Graham, who has staged many excellent Live Role Play (LRP) events brought this to life for me and my motley band of warriors.

Below I’ll just recount one of the memories I have of this event.

We crept quietly to the edge of the wood; within I saw the massed array of candles that illuminated the Mother’s shrine. The light of the myriad candles made the surrounding trees and thicket darker than dark. I knew I must reach the Mother, I must slay her…. “Wars are won in the will” the wise woman had said. The Mother of the Wendol is the will and she must die.

We were 13 as we approached the shrine, nothing stirred, for we had stealthily slaughtered the guards. So close and the bushes erupted as hidden figures burst forth, it seemed like hundreds, we were separated and I desperately used my shield to block the raining blows to give me time to find allies. Then all of a sudden the two next to me are friends, and we go back to back and beat off five times our number. The shouts and screams of dying ring in my ears, blood splatters my face and chest (this was done by one of the crew staying out of sight and flicking fake blood in your face when you struck, how real that makes it feel!) and soon the enemy are gone and I here the shout.

“Go….. Kill Her” (just like the film).

And I head for the confrontation…..

The moment I met the Mother of the Wendol, I simply can’t put into words. She looked so like the woman in the film it sent a shiver down my back, everything was there from the poison in the pot, to the crafted figure of the mother to cruel and wicked claw she used to poison me. At that moment I lost all reality and I was Buliwyf and I was in 13th Warrior.

That is an experience I will remember for the rest of my life, and I can never thank Terry enough for creating it.

Ask yourself, does your holiday ever compare to that?
Here are some images from the event, each has a little explanation of what is going on.

1. I am the warrior Drusus (blue shield). I have taken the Skald away for a quiet word. There is something wrong in this place yet none may speak of it, some ancient Evil. I try to get him to speak.

2. Manfred joins the conversation but still the Skald holds his tongue, what is it we face?

3. Another Kriegshund Horst. My best friend Simon!

4. An Audience with King Rothgar, there can be no mistaking they are plagued by the Wendol. The man is old and weak, how will he hold his house together?

5. And Finally some of the Wendol that nearly chopped me to ribbons.... thanks Guys!

Lazy's Shop of Horrors
By Lazy_Man, Sergeant of the Cavalry

Ok some of you might know and some of you might not, but I, Lazy, have opened up a shop. And before you ask, no, its not just any shop. Its my shop and its a shop of Horrors. This shop is a place where you can put amusing pics and also some disturbing pics. Like the one and only Manfaye. If there is any type of pic that your are after, say one about ducks or monkeys or maybe just a humorous pic, post it in there and I can take a look around and see what I can do. Also if you want to post your own pics you may, but just remember that there is a PG13 rating on these boards and you must adhere to that. If you have a pic that is questionable, PM Corki with the pic and ask him.

Another place i have been posting some pics is Cumadrin's thread on the General Boards, so take a look there in case you miss some of the brilliant pics displayed.

The Marshal-General's Monthly Recommendation
By Corki, The Marshal-General

As another moth draws to a close, its time for another recommendation. I hope that many of you had a look at my last recommendation, The Banned and the Bannished Series by James Clemens. It is a really good fantasy series!

So, last month was a book. This month will be a film. The latest film I saw was Tim Burton's adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It has finally come to where I live, and like most films, it is usually a month or so after it has been released! It was a very good film, nevertheless, and I am still trying to work out whether it was better than the original!

One definite improvement is the Oompa Lumpas! They had so much more character this time! And their songs were brilliant! A definite plus to the film!

I also enjoyed the Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka. To me, Willy Wonka does not seem to be a friendly character, but an extravagant one. Johnny Depp put in a great performance, and the madness of Wonka was definietly enhanced by his make up and those glasses! Another improvement on the original film!

Whatever you think, the latest version is a must see! It is a film that all can enjoy! Go and see it as soon as possible!!!
